Alfred Nobel

Alfred Bernhard Nobel was born on October 21, 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1842, Alfred Nobel moved to Russia. It was there that he went to school. As a teenager, he traveled a lot, allowing him to become fluent in five different languages. He wrote books, poetry, and plays with his spare time. In the 1860’s, he began to try to find ways to stabilize the volatile material nitroglycerin. Alfred Nobel found out that it was highly effective to use nitroglycerin when destroying rocks. He also created a detonator that could be activated by lighting a fuse. This amazing invention was patented in 1867. He made a total of nine-million dollars with his prized invention: dynamite. Alfred Nobel decided to donate his money to benefit humanity because he had created a weapon. In 1901, the first Nobel Prize Award was given out.
